Questions cooks ask
How do I calculate calories in a homemade recipe?
Weigh or convert each ingredient to grams, multiply by its calories per 100 g, add them up, then divide by the number of servings. This calculator does that automatically for every line it recognises.
Where do the nutrition numbers come from?
Calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat per 100 g are rounded from the USDA FoodData Central database for the generic version of each ingredient. Brands differ, so check the label for exact figures.
Does cooking change the calories?
Cooking doesn’t destroy calories, but it changes weight: water evaporates, fat renders out. That’s why calculating from raw ingredients and dividing by servings is more reliable than weighing the finished dish.
What if an ingredient isn’t recognised?
Unrecognised lines are listed separately with zero calories so you can see what’s missing. Pick the closest ingredient from the drop-down on that line, or add its calories from the package yourself.
