Why recipes round oven temperatures
Home ovens swing 10–25 °F around the set point as the element cycles on and off, so 177 °C and 180 °C are the same oven in practice. That’s why a US 350 °F becomes 180 °C, not 176.7 °C. An inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle rack tells you far more than a precise conversion.
Fan ovens circulate air, which strips away the cool layer of air around food. Most manufacturers suggest dropping the temperature by 20 °C, or keeping it and checking for doneness 10–15% earlier.
Questions cooks ask
What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?
180 °C is 356 °F; recipes round it to 350 °F (gas mark 4). It’s the classic moderate oven for cakes and cookies.
What is 350 °F in Celsius?
350 °F is 177 °C, usually written as 180 °C, or 160 °C in a fan (convection) oven.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32. For Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32, multiply by 5 and divide by 9.
How much lower should a fan oven be?
Reduce by about 20 °C (25 °F). Fans move hot air across the food, so heat transfers faster at the same thermostat setting. Check your oven manual: some models compensate automatically.
What is gas mark 6?
About 200 °C / 400 °F, a hot oven for roasting and pastry.
